The price of climate action is changing: what this means for your personal plan

Your questions answered

• Will the price of my subscription be increasing automatically?

  No – we have opted to keep all prices consistent and instead lower the impact for our current subscribers. If you want to continue having the same amount of climate impact, then yes, the price you will pay to do so will increase. You can increase your subscription at any time via this link.

• I already have a live Climate Positive Gift. Will this still be valid?

  Yes, all existing Climate Positive Gifts will be fulfilled. Climate Positive Gifts are no longer available for purchase, however.

• How has Ecologi kept prices low for this length of time?

  Even though the price of carbon avoidance has been increasing consistently during the past year, we have continued to source some of the cheapest prices available, partly due to the size of our carbon credit orders, and also by spending a lot of time and energy sourcing some of the very cheapest prices available anywhere in the world.

   

  Despite our ability to source these cheaper prices, the market price of carbon avoidance has continued to rise, and this trend may continue. This has meant that we have had to increase our budget to better align with current market prices so that we can continue to fund effective climate solutions.

   

  Our reforestation partners are also facing increasing tree planting costs, which they must pass on to us so that they can continue their tree planting activities, meaning that we have had to increase our budget per tree. To keep our prices as low as possible, we have been balancing more expensive trees, planted in areas of the world where tree planting is more costly, with cheaper trees, planted in areas of the world where planting is cheapest. We will continue to do this to ensure that we can support a wide range of high quality tree planting projects, at the lowest prices possible.

• Why are carbon footprints much higher in the USA, Canada and Australia?

  Average carbon footprints vary from country to country for a variety of factors. These include: 

  – The national energy mix (how much of a country’s energy comes from fossil fuels). This is particularly high in certain countries, such as the USA, Canada and Australia.

  – The emissions created by land use change (e.g. deforestation).

  – Emissions transfers (emissions generated in other countries through manufacturing for example).

  All of these factors influence the total emissions of a country and therefore the average per capita carbon footprint of its citizens.

• Why does each subscription in the USA, Canada and Australia have more trees included?

  To keep the price of our subscriptions the same, we’ve changed the amount of impact each subscription funds. This has resulted in subscriptions for community members in the USA, Canada and Australia offsetting a smaller percentage of their carbon footprint compared with the UK, Europe and the Rest of the World subscriptions.

  However, while the amount of impact each subscription funds has changed, we have also done our best to maximise the amount of impact the new price can fund. Due to the percentage of a footprint being offset by subscribers in the USA, Canada and Australia being lower than in the rest of the world, we were able to slightly increase the number of trees these subscriptions fund each month.
